Hurricanes Advance to NCAA Second Round
AUBURN, Ala. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team (15-7) opened the NCAA Team Championships with a 4-0 win over the North Florida Ospreys (25-1) on Friday afternoon.
The Hurricanes opened the match with the opening point, as Sebastianna Scilipoti and Sofia Rocchetti took down Aryana Bartlett and Anslee Long, 6-2, on court two. Raquel Gonzalez and Dominika Podhajecka then sealed it with a 6-4 win over Laurie Barendse and Isabel Oliveira at the top court.
Jaquelyn Ogunwale and Maria Vargas were tied 4-4 with Gabby Goyins and Jasmin Makela on court three when play was halted.
Going into singles with the lead, Daria Volosova and No. 114 Ogunwale earned quick wins to extend the lead. Volosova took down Anslee Long, 6-0, 6-4, on court six, before Ogunwale earned the dominant 6-2, 6-1 over May Fadida.
To send Miami to the second round, No. 38 Gonzalez clinched it over Barendse, 6-3, 6-4, at the top court.
The Hurricanes will face the winner of second-seeded Auburn and Bryant tomorrow.
