Garvin One to Watch for Walter Camp POY Award
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Junior defensive lineman Jonathan Garvin was among the 40 student-athletes selected to the preseason watch list for the Walter Camp Football Foundation Player of the Year Award.
Garvin enjoyed a breakout season as a sophomore in 2018, starting all 13 games and finishing with a career-high 60 tackles. Garvin was fourth in the ACC and second on the Hurricanes with 17 tackles for loss, and he finished the year with 5.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries and the first touchdown of his career.
The preseason accolade is the third for Garvin, who was also named to watch lists for the Chuck Bednarik Award and Bronko Nagurski Trophy.
Garvin was a critical member of a standout Hurricanes defensive unit that finished No. 4 in the NCAA in total defense and No. 1 in multiple categories, including tackles for loss and passing yards allowed.
The watch list will be narrowed to 10 semi-finalists in mid-November. The 2019 Walter Camp Player of the Year recipient, which is voted on by the 130 NCAA Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors, will be announced live on ESPN on Thursday, December 12. The winner will then receive his trophy at the Foundation’s 53rd annual national awards banquet on January 18, 2020 in New Haven, Conn.
