Del Castillo Adds Two Freshman All-America Honors
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Miami Hurricanes’ rookie Adrian Del Castillo picked up a pair of Freshman All-America honors on Friday, appearing on the Baseball America 2019 College Baseball Freshman All-American Team and the D1 Baseball Freshman All-America Team.
Selected as the first team designated hitter by both publications, the versatile Del Castillo’s impressive offensive numbers helped him distinguish himself as one of the top freshmen in the country. His selection by Baseball America and D1 Baseball give Del Castillo four Freshman All-America distinctions. He also was named a Perfect Game Freshman All-American and was joined by right-handed pitcher Slade Cecconi on the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Freshman All-America Team. Del Castillo was also named ABCA All-Region, adding to the bevy of honors collected following an excellent freshman campaign.
The freshman has earned a host of awards after his collegiate debut season, including Second Team All-ACC, ACC All-Freshman Team and all-regional at the 2019 Starkville Regional. He finished the season batting .331 with 78 hits, 22 doubles and 72 RBI, all team-bests. Del Castillo also scored 58 runs and clubbed 12 homers, while striking out just 24 times in 236 at-bats.
The Miami native finished the season tied for the team lead with 22 multi-hit games and second on the team with 18 multi-RBI performances. A versatile player who started all 61 games in 2019, Del Castillo made starts at catcher, right field, designated hitter and third base. Del Castillo was outstanding is his first NCAA postseason, hitting .353 with two doubles, three homers and seven RBI over four games at the Starkville Regional.
Del Castillo carved his name is the Miami record books in 2019. The freshman began his career with a 15-game hitting streak that tied for the longest by a Miami freshman since Esteban Tresgallo in 2012. His 72 RBI are the second-most by a UM freshman in program history, finishing just four shy of Ryan Braun’s record 76, set in 2003. The 72 runs batted also were the most by a Miami freshman since Yonder Alonso drove in 69 runs as a freshman in 2006. Lastly, Del Castillo’s 18 multi-RBI games are the most by a Hurricane freshman since Zack Collins posted 15 in 2014.
