Freddy Zamora Named ACC Player of the Week
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami shortstop Freddy Zamora was named the ACC Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office Monday.
Zamora was dominant at the plate in keying the Hurricanes to a 3-1 week and a 2-1 start to ACC play. After helping Miami beat Appalachian State on Wednesday, Zamora had three hits, including two doubles, in the series opener against Georgia Tech on Friday. The sophomore shortstop hit a walk-off two-run homer on Saturday night that capped another three-hit night and evened the series with Georgia Tech.
“Freddy is a great player,” head coach Gino DiMare said after Saturday’s game. “I’ve said it to him before he can be one of the all-time greats if he wants to be. He’s the kind of guy that when the game is over he usually should be the best player on the field from both teams. That’s the kind of player he is. He plays with a lot of confidence and it seems to me like the game comes easy to him. He’s never overwhelmed by anything.”
On Sunday, he tied the game with a two-run shot in the first inning that sparked a 9-6 Miami win over the Yellow Jackets and secured a series victory.
Zamora finished the Georgia Tech series 7-for-13 (.538) with two doubles, two homers, four runs scored, four RBI, an intentional walk and a stolen base.
“He’s definitely the best player in the series, for sure,” DiMare said after Sunday’s win. “Freddy has made some big strides lately. I can tell in practice and pregame, just his preparation has been outstanding. If he keeps that up, he could be the best shortstop in the country.”
Zamora had an impressive stat line for the week, batting .533 (8-for-15) with two doubles, two home runs, five runs scored, four RBI, three walks and a stolen base.
A freshman All-American and ACC All-Freshman selection a year ago, Zamora is second in the ACC with a .424 batting average. He has started all 15 games in 2019, going 25-for-59 with eight doubles, four home runs, 17 runs scored, 18 RBI and three stolen bases. He is slugging .500 and has a .763 on-base percentage.
The Canes will wrap up a nine-game homestand this coming Tuesday and Wednesday, as they welcome Jackson State to The Light for a midweek series. Both games are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
