Field Events Lead Canes at Hurricane Alumni Meet

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Miami Hurricanes kicked off the Hurricane Alumni Invitational with a strong day in the field events.
 
The Canes earned victories in both the men’s and women’s shot put, setting the tone for this weekend’s meet at Cobb Stadium.
 
Gian Piero Ragonesi won the men’s shot put with a mark of 18.13m, while Debbie Ajagbe followed with a victory in the women’s shot put at 14.97m and Sherry Lubin was second with a mark of 13.79m.
 
Andreas Christodoulou was seventh in the men’s high jump with a personal-best mark of 1.91m.
 
Five Canes finished in the top 11 in the women’s high jump, led by Erika Voyzey and Celine Thompson’s tie for third place with a mark of 1.69m.
 
Tiara McMinn was fifth in the high jump at 1.69m, while Michelle Atherley was seventh with a mark of 1.64m and Kyra Maryland finished 11th with a mark of 1.59m
 
Atherley also finished sixth in the women’s javelin with a throw of 31.65m.
 
Saturday’s competition begins at 9 a.m. with the men’s decathlon 110m hurdles, while the women’s heptathlon long jump starts at 9:30 a.m. Field events begin at 11:30 a.m. Saturday with the men’s and women’s hammer throw, while the action on the track starts at 2:30 p.m. with the women’s 3000m steeplechase.
 
Miami will recognize 14 seniors during the women’s 5000m at 6:10 p.m. Saturday, including men’s standouts Henri Delauze, Sean Grossman, Nathan Kuck, Jaalen Jones and Gian Piero Ragonesi and women’s standouts Amy Taintor, Kristina Knott, Stefani Kerrison and Niara Hill.
