Miami Up to No. 3 in CFP Rankings

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The Miami Hurricanes jumped to No. 3 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings released Tuesday night, earning their first positioning in the “top four” of the rankings since the inception of the CFP in 2014.

Miami (9-0) was behind No. 1 Alabama (10-0) and No. 2 Clemson (9-1) but checked in ahead of No. 4 Oklahoma (9-1).

According to ESPN Stats & Info, Miami’s four-spot leap from last week’s CFP rank of No. 7 matches the largest jump of any team into the top four in the four-year history of the rankings (2014 Alabama, 2015 Oklahoma).

The Hurricanes, who throttled No. 8 Notre Dame, 41-8, last time out at Hard Rock Stadium on Nov. 11, checked in at No. 10 in the first CFP rankings released on Oct. 31.

Earlier this week, Miami (9-0, 6-0 ACC) climbed five spots from No. 7 to No. 2 in the Associated Press rankings and earned four first-place votes, marking its highest position in that poll this season and matching its highest since the Oct. 26, 2003 AP poll (also No. 2). The Hurricanes climbed four spots from No. 6 to No. 2 in the Amway Coaches Poll, their highest since the same Oct. 26, 2003 poll (No. 2).
 
The Hurricanes, who are ranked in the top 10 of both polls for the fifth straight week, entered the season ranked in both preseason polls for the first time since 2010.
 
In their two seasons under the direction of head coach Mark Richt, the Hurricanes have been ranked in the top 10 of both polls in both seasons; in Week 6 of 2016, Miami was ranked No. 10 in both the Associated Press poll and Amway Coaches Poll.
 
Miami closes a three-game homestand with a matchup against Virginia (6-4, 3-3 ACC) on Nov. 18. Kickoff for Miami’s Senior Day matchup is set for 12 p.m. on ABC from Hard Rock Stadium.
