Herndon, Pinckney Recognized With Weekly Honors

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — University of Miami senior tight end Christopher Herndon and sophomore linebacker Michael Pinckney were among those recognized with weekly honors from the Atlantic Coast Conference, as announced Monday.

Herndon was named ACC Receiver of the Week, while Pinckney was recognized with ACC Linebacker of the Week honors.

The two join Braxton Berrios (Receiver of the Week, Oct. 9), Darrell Langham (Co-Receiver of the Week, Oct. 16) and Michael Badgley (Specialist of the Week, Oct. 16) as Miami honorees through the first eight weeks of the season. Herndon’s selection marked the third straight week a Miami player has been recognized with ACC Receiver of the Week or Co-Receiver of the Week honors.

No offensive player was more pivotal to Miami’s offensive attack against Syracuse than Herndon, who caught a career-high 10 passes and totaled a career-best 96 yards with one touchdown in a 27-19 victory. Herndon bested his previous career high of eight catches set earlier this year against Toledo, and had already set a career mark for yards by the time the first half concluded.

Herndon, who came just two catches shy of tying Miami’s single-game all-time reception mark (12), has already matched last season’s reception total (28) and touchdown total (two). The Georgia native has started every game at tight end this season.

Pinckney was a force in the middle of Miami’s defense Saturday, helping lead the Hurricanes to a win over the Orange at Hard Rock Stadium. Pinckney led all Hurricanes with nine tackles (six solo) and added career-best marks in both tackles for loss (3.5) and sacks (2.5). Pinckney had two solo sacks in the victory – marking the first multi-sack performance of his career – and helped the Miami defense become the first ACC unit to hold Syracuse without a first-half touchdown.

Pinckney was named Walter Camp Defensive Player of the Week on Sunday for his standout performance in the middle of Miami’s defense.

Miami continues its ACC slate with a matchup at North Carolina at Kenan Stadium on Oct. 28. Kickoff is set for noon on ESPN2.
