Elder Selected in Fifth Round of 2017 NFL Draft
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Miami Hurricanes cornerback Corn Elder was selected with the 152nd overall pick by the Carolina Panthers Saturday afternoon in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft.
Elder’s selection marks the second consecutive season a Hurricane cornerback has been taken in the NFL Draft and the 43rd Miami defensive back chosen in the modern era.
The Nashville, Tenn., native had a breakout senior season for the Hurricanes in 2016 as he started all 13 games and finished fourth on the team in tackles, closing the year with 76 stops (56 solo). Elder also had a team-best 12 pass breakups.
Following the year, Elder was named All-ACC First Team by the league’s coaches and earned Second Team honors by ACSMA.
As a junior in 2015, Elder started seven of the Hurricanes’ 13 games and totaled 41 tackles. He also finished the year tied for fifth in the ACC with 12 passes defended.
In addition, Elder showcased his ability as a punt and kick returner, as he had two touchdown returns, including a 75-yard kickoff return against Duke as time expired.
