CANES RETURN TO TOBACCO ROAD, PLAY UNC

• Winners of five of their last seven games, the Miami Hurricanes travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., for a weekend series with ACC Coastal foe North Carolina beginning Friday, March 24 at Boshamer Stadium.

• Miami carries a 37-26-1 all-time series lead against the Tar Heels, and has won six of the last seven series dating to 2010. The Hurricanes won two of three in their last trip to Chapel Hill in 2015, and swept North Carolina in the 2016 regular season series.

• In their last 24 games against North Carolina, the Hurricanes have an 18-6 record.

• Miami junior righthander Jesse Lepore (1-2, 3.60 ERA) will oppose Tar Heels lefthander J.B. Bukauskas (3-0, 1.09 ERA) in the opener Friday night (ACC Network Extra & WVUM 90.5 FM).

LAST TIME OUT: MIAMI TOPS FAU IN MIDWEEK

• Miami cruised to a 7-5 win over FAU Wednesday, March 22 at Mark Light Field to pick up their fifth win in the last seven games.

• Freshman righthander Greg Veliz delivered another impressive start, striking out a career high-tying seven in 5.2 innings. He gave up one run to improve his record to 2-1.

• Junior Carl Chester led the offense with a 2-for-3, two-run, two-RBI performance. He connected on a two-run home run in the second inning, one of two Miami homers in the victory.

• With Miami leading 7-1 in the ninth inning, FAU struck for four runs on a pair of two-run home runs, but Miami held on for the win.

HEATING UP

• Miami has won five of its past seven games dating to a 17-7 win over Georgia Tech on Sunday, March 12 that helped the Hurricanes capture their opening ACC series over the Yellow Jackets.

• Sophomore Romy Gonzalez has led the offense over that stretch with a .333 average, nine runs, eight hits, two homers and seven RBI.

• Junior Brandon Gali has started the past three games at shortstop and has hit .364 (4-for-11) with one double, one triple, three RBI and two stolen bases.

• Senior Johnny Ruiz has reached base in 15 straight games.

SUPER SOPHOMORES: CABEZAS & BARTOW

• Two of Miami’s top contributors out of the bullpen have been sophomore righthanders Frankie Bartow and Andrew Cabezas.

• Over the past 10 games, Cabezas has made six appearances and has 18 strikeouts compared to three walks in his last 12.0 innings. He is holding opponents to a .205 average over that stretch, and earned his first save with two scoreless innings on March 14 vs. Maine.

• Bartow leads UM with five saves and has a 3.24 ERA in 8.1 innings. He was a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America in 2016.

ONE OF THE GAME’S TOP SKIPPERS

• Jim Morris’ 1,545 wins at the Division I level are fifth-most in the history of college baseball and third-most among active skippers.

• Miami’s first ACC series against Georgia Tech pitted two of the winningest coaches in college baseball history: Morris (1,543 wins) and Georgia Tech’s Danny Hall (1,176), who replaced Morris in Atlanta when Morris was named Miami’s head coach prior to the 1994 season.

• Morris reached two major milestones in 2016 – he became the fifth coach to reach 1,500 wins on March 18 against Louisville and won his 1,000th game at Miami on March 26 vs. Clemson.
