RALEIGH, N.C. – Miami went ahead in the middle innings but ultimately fell to host NC State Saturday night at Doak Field, dropping Game 2 of an ACC series by a final score of 5-2.
The Hurricanes scored a run in the ninth on a triple from junior Brandon Gali and brought the tying-run to the plate trailing by three, but NC State closer Austin Staley induced a game-ending double play to seal the win.
In a game marred by two weather delays, the Wolfpack (12-8, 3-2 ACC) took a one-run lead in the fifth and added insurance in the seventh to capture a series victory.
The Hurricanes (8-11, 2-3 ACC) will look to salvage the weekend with a win in the finale Sunday. First pitch is set for noon.
“We haven’t gotten many breaks,” head coach Jim Morris said. “The answer is we have to keep playing hard, keep working hard, keep coaching hard and doing all of those things. We’ve got to get some guys hot in the lineup.”
A one-hour, 32-minute lightning delay prematurely ended the night of junior lefthander Jeb Bargfeldt, who was efficient in his 2.1 innings.
NC State loaded the bases in the third, with the last batter Bargfeldt facing – Wolfpack freshman Will Wilson – drawing a four-pitch walk before play was halted at 7:16 p.m.
Play resumed at 8:48 p.m. Freshman Evan McKendry entered in relief and, after four pitches, immediately found himself in a second weather delay – this one much shorter, at just 15 minutes.
The first pitch McKendry (2-1) threw to NC State’s Evan Mendoza once play resumed a second time resulted in a slickly turned double play by the Miami infield that ended the inning.
NC State was also forced into an early pitching change, with designated hitter Tommy DeJuneas taking the mound after bad weather exited the area.
Wolfpack starter Brian Brown tossed three scoreless innings. He struck out three batters and walked one.
The Hurricanes took their first lead of the weekend in the fifth, with junior Brandon Gali rocketing a double to left-center to open the inning. After a sacrifice bunt from redshirt senior Christopher Barr pushed Gali to third, senior Joe Gomez executed a perfect squeeze bunt play up the first base line to score the opening run.
NC State responded with a pair of runs in the home half of the fifth to take a 2-1 lead.
An RBI double from NC State’s Josh McLain scored Andy Cosgrove from second base, and on a wild pitch from McKendry, Brock Deatherage – who walked earlier in the inning – scored to put the hosts ahead.
The Wolfpack added three insurance runs in the seventh on an RBI single from Deatherage and a two-RBI triple from Will Wilson hit off Miami reliever Albert Maury, Jr.
Making his first start since March 1, Gali went 2-for-4, reaching base three on the fifth-inning double, a walk and the late triple.
With senior Randy Batista on base after a one-out single in the ninth, Gali crushed a pitch to the right-center gap to cut the deficit to 5-2.
Freshman Greg Veliz drew a walk to put runners on the corners, but Staley got pinch hitter Nico Baldor to hit into a double play to end the game.
“Hitting is contagious, and we need to catch that right now and get it going,” Morris said.
Junior Carl Chester reached base for the 15th straight game with a single in the first inning, while senior Johnny Ruiz extended his streak to 13 straight games reaching base with his first-inning walk.
The two teams return to Doak Field Sunday for Game 3 of the weekend series. First pitch for the matchup, slated for broadcast on ACC Network Extra and WVUM 90.5 FM, is set for 12 p.m.
