#ProCanes Report -11/7/16
The Monday #ProCanes Report will weed through all the NFL highlights and news to bring you the information you care about the most… what the former University of Miami Hurricanes did during the week prior. Making his first career NFL start, rookie cornerback Artie Burns wasted little time in making an impact for the Pittsburgh Steelers defense. Burns recorded the first interception of his career against the Ravens in the first quarter Sunday, highlighting another strong week for #ProCanes. Read on for more from across the NFL.
TOP PERFORMERS
Artie Burns (Pittsburgh Steelers) – four tackles, one interception, two passes defended
For the first time in 10 seasons, a Steelers rookie recorded an interception – in his first career start, no less. Rookie cornerback Artie Burns picked off an errant pass by Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco in the first quarter of a 21-14 loss to division rival Baltimore Sunday. Burns added two passes defended and recorded at least four tackles for the third straight game and for the fourth time this season. The young standout defensive back has 23 tackles through the team’s first eight games.
Frank Gore (Indianapolis Colts) – 60 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns, two receptions
In a year where two of his teammates from the 2001 Miami national championship team and longtime #ProCanes have retired, 12th-year running back Frank Gore shows little sign of slowing down. Gore totaled 60 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns in a 31-26 win at Green Bay Sunday. With two receptions out of the backfield, Gore joined Walter Payton, Emmitt Smith, Curtis Martin and LaDainian Tomlinson as the only NFL players with 12,500+ career rushing yards and 400 career catches.
Greg Olsen (Carolina Panthers) – five receptions, 52 yards, one touchdown
A week after posting just one reception in a win over Arizona, 10th-year tight end Greg Olsen rebounded with a five-catch, 52-yard performance in a 13-10 victory over the Los Angeles Rams. Olsen has at least five receptions in every game but one this season and is on pace for a career-high yardage total and reception total in his seventh season with the Panthers. Olsen has 45 receptions for 673 yards with three touchdowns through Carolina’s first half of the season.
Olivier Vernon (New York Giants) – five tackles, one sack
New York Giants defensive end Olivier Vernon enjoyed a strong performance in Sunday’s 28-23 win over division rival Philadelphia. Vernon, who reportedly has been playing with a shattered hand, totaled five tackles and had his second sack of the season on a takedown of Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz. Vernon’s pressure in the backfield led to one of Wentz’s interceptions, and his five tackles were his second-highest total in any game this year.
