'Breast Cancer Awareness' Game Set for Saturday

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness month, and in an effort to encourage breast cancer screening for men and women, No. 16 Miami’s showdown with North Carolina on Sat., Oct. 15 at Hard Rock Stadium has been designated the team’s “Breast Cancer Awareness” game.

In partnership with the Sylvester Cancer Center, 40,000 pink rally towels will be distributed to fans while 5,000 pink sunglasses will be given to students who attend.

All fans are encouraged to wear pink for the game. The Hurricanes will be wearing pink wristbands and gloves during the game, while pink ribbons will be painted on the field. The orange pylons in the corner of the end zone will have pink accents, and all videoboards will have a pink backdrop in recognition of the game.

Before the national anthem, the American flag will be unfurled by breast cancer patients, doctors, nurses and family members who have been affected by breast cancer.

The coin toss participant will be a breast cancer survivor, and Dr. Felicia Knaul –Director of the Miami Institute for the Americas, Professor in the University of Miami’s Department of Public Health Sciences at the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine,  and wife of President Julio Frenk and First Lady of UM– will take part in a game ball presentation. Dr. Knaul, who lived through a breast cancer diagnosis in 2007, is a global advocate for increasing access to early detection and treatment for low-income women.
