Fisher Named NSCAA College Player of the Week

CORAL GABLES, Fla. After her first weekend of collegiate competition, freshman Kristina Fisher of the University of Miami soccer team has already garnered a prestigious national honor.

A forward from Jupiter, Fla., Fisher has been selected as the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) College Player of the Week, as announced Tuesday afternoon.

“I am proud of Kristina for earning this award,” Miami head coach Mary-Frances Monroe said. “She had a wonderful week, scoring some great goals and adding some assists. She is going to be really fun to watch play this season.”

Fisher opened her career in style, scoring the Hurricanes’ first goal of the season in a 7-0 victory at North Florida Friday. She went on to add a second goal in the opening half and tallied an assist in the second.

Her performance against the Ospreys made Fisher the second player in program history to record at least five points in a season opener. Additionally, she is just the second freshman and fifth Hurricane overall to notch multiple goals in the first match of the year.

Fisher followed her outing at North Florida by turning in another dominant showing at Stetson two days later. After scoring the opening goal of the match, which again proved to be the decisive tally in a 3-0 win, she tacked on assists on each of the Hurricanes’ two second half goals.

Overall, Fisher finished the first weekend of the 2016 campaign with three goals, three assists and nine points. She tops the nation in points and is tied for the lead in game-winning goals, while also tying for second in assists and tying for fifth in goals.

The 5-foot-5-inch Fisher, who enrolled early at Miami in January, also leads or co-leads the ACC in all those categories.

Fisher and the Hurricanes will play their first home match of the season Friday at 8 p.m., against No. 23 Ohio State at Cobb Stadium.
