Collins, Garcia Named First-Team All-Americans
CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Juniors Zack Collins and Bryan Garcia were among those players recognized as first-team All-Americans by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), the organization was announced Wednesday.
One of the most talented sluggers in Miami history, Collins enters the 2016 College World Series ranked among the top Division I hitters nationwide. He ranks third in career home runs (41), third in career RBI (181) and first in career walks (174) among all active players.
Collins ranks seventh all-time in career home runs at Miami and is alone in 10th in career RBI. His 174 career walks are the fourth-most in UM history, while his 75 walks this season are the third-most in a single season.
Collins, who was named to the Baseball America All-America First Team earlier in June, was selected No. 10 overall by the Chicago White Sox in the first round of the 2016 MLB First-Year Player Draft.
A finalist for the 2016 Stopper of the Year Award by NCBWA, Garcia set the Miami saves record with the 40th of his career on May 26 vs. NC State. His 18 saves in 2016 are the most in the ACC and second-most in the nation.
Garcia, who added three saves in the first two weekends of the NCAA postseason, has 43 career saves – the most by any active pitcher nationwide and tied for ninth-most in Division I history.
The Miami native was selected in the sixth round of the 2016 MLB Draft by the Detroit Tigers (No. 170 overall) on June 11.
