Lohan and Wagner/Zhang Ranked Second in ITA Region
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The ITA released its final 2015-16 regional rankings Wednesday evening and five members of the University of Miami women’s tennis team are included, while the Hurricanes earned the No. 3 spot on the team list.
Miami, which went 21-6 (12-2 ACC) in 2016 and concluded the year at No. 10 in the Oracle/ITA national rankings, earned its eighth straight top-three regional finish. The last seven have come as a part of the Southeast Region, which currently includes schools such as Florida, Florida State, Georgia and Georgia Tech.
In the regional singles rankings, sophomore Sinead Lohan checked in at No. 2, the highest finish by a Hurricane since Bianca Eichkorn ended the 2011 season second in the region.
Senior Stephanie Wagner is ranked fourth, making Miami the lone team with multiple players in the top four. This is the second consecutive year Lohan and Wagner are both in the top five in the Southeast Region.
Yolimar Ogando, who missed the entire spring due to injury, earned the No. 12 spot on the list and was followed shortly thereafter by fellow sophomore Wendy Zhang at No. 14. Freshman Ana Madcur received the first ITA recognition of her career, holding the final spot, No. 20, in the rankings.
Miami and Florida are the only schools with four players in the top 15 of the Southeast Region singles list and are also the lone two teams with at least five players in the top 20.
In the doubles rankings, Wagner and Zhang ended their campaign second in the region. It is the best regional finish for a Miami doubles pair since then-sophomore Clementina Riobueno checked in at No. 2 with Monique Albuquerque in 2013.
The end-of-season regional rankings are voted on by select coaches from each region. The full list of the final 2015-16 ITA Southeast Region rankings can be found HERE.
