CANES WELCOME CAVALIERS TO THE LIGHT
• Top-ranked Miami continues an eight-game homestand Friday with the first of three games against Virginia at Mark Light Field.
• The Hurricanes took two of three games in last weekend’s series at Duke (April 15-17), extending their stretch to seven straight series wins. Miami last fell in a series to then-No. 1 Florida from Feb. 26-28.
• UVA leads the all-time head-to-head series by a close 24-23 margin; the two teams split four games (2-2) played in 2015, including a 9-5 Miami win at the 2015 ACC Championship in Durham, N.C. on May 20.
• Senior lefthander Thomas Woodrey (4-2, 4.43 ERA) will oppose Cavaliers righthander Connor Jones (7-1, 2.17 ERA) in the opener.
NUMBER ONE FOR WEEK NUMBER TWO
• Miami was ranked No. 1 in five of six college baseball polls released Monday, April 18 – marking the first time the Hurricanes have been No. 1 in back-to-back weeks since June 3 & June 10, 2008.
• Miami was ranked No. 1 by Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, Perfect Game, D1Baseball and the USA TODAY Coaches Poll, and were No. 2 by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).
COLLINS, GARCIA SPIKES CANDIDATES
• Miami juniors Zack Collins and Bryan Garcia were among the 60 players named to the midseason watch list for the 2016 Golden Spikes Award, USA Baseball announced Wednesday, April 20.
• Miami was one of just eight schools to have multiple players listed; former 3B David Thompson was a 2015 Spikes semifinalist.
• The only Golden Spikes Award winner in program history is Pat Burrell, who won the award in 1998.
GOLD GLOVE DEFENSE
• In the newest NCAA Division I statistics released April 21, Miami had the fourth-best fielding percentage in the country and the best fielding percentage in the ACC at .983.
• Miami has made just 23 errors in 2016, compared to 56 by opponents. The Hurricanes had made 45 errors at this point in 2015 (35 games) – a year where Miami made it to the College World Series.
• The Hurricanes’ starting infield of third baseman Edgar Michelangeli (1), shortstop Brandon Lopez (4), second baseman Johnny Ruiz (4) and first baseman Christopher Barr (2) have combined for just 11 errors.
