@CanesWTennis Rises to No. 6, Wagner Ranked No. 5

CORAL GABLES, Fla. The University of Miami women’s tennis team ascended six spots in the latest Oracle/ITA rankings, moving from No. 12 in the nation all the way to sixth, as announced Tuesday afternoon.

In addition, senior Stephanie Wagner is now ranked in the top five for the first time in her illustrious collegiate career, as she checks in at No. 5 on the singles list. Sophomore Sinead Lohan also earned the highest ranking of her career, as she is sixth in the country.

Posting three wins since the last rankings release, including a 4-2 win over then-second-ranked Ohio State, Miami (10-4, 5-2) cut its ranking in half in its move to sixth in the country. The Hurricanes have won six matches in a row and the No. 6 ranking matches their best since the poll released May 2, 2013.

The Hurricanes are now the second-highest-ranked team in the ACC and remains the top-ranked team in the state of Florida. Miami is one of seven ACC schools in the top 25, including five in the top 15. The ACC also has four of the top six players in the Oracle/ITA singles rankings.

Along with Wagner and Lohan in the top six, sophomores Yolimar Ogando and Wendy Zhang are also on the singles list. Despite not playing yet this spring due to injury, Ogando jumped up five spots to No. 34, while Zhang holds the No. 109 position.

In doubles, Wagner and Zhang moved up one spot to ninth in the country, marking the highest doubles ranking of Zhang’s career. Wagner is also ranked in doubles with Clementina Riobueno, as the senior duo comes in at No. 66, a 10-spot bump.

Miami is the only team in the nation with two singles players in the top six and Wagner is one of three players with a top-nine ranking in both singles and doubles.

Head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews’ Hurricanes will be back on the court Friday at 1 p.m. when they welcome No. 12 Virginia to the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. Miami will then host No. 53 Boston College Sunday at 11 a.m.
