McCarthy Voted to ACC SAAC E-Board

CORAL GABLES, Fla. Shannon McCarthy of the University of Miami soccer team has been voted as an At-Large Representative on the ACC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Executive Board.

A redshirt junior defender, McCarthy was one of three candidates from the conference and won the election to claim her spot on the board.

“I am not surprised that Shannon has earned this designation,” Director of Student-Athlete Development Shirelle Jackson said. “She has truly taken advantage of every opportunity we have to offer here at the University of Miami. Her ability to lead on and off the field is a true testament to her strong time management and leadership skills. We are beyond proud of her.”

McCarthy is in her second year as one of Miami’s representatives on the ACC SAAC, for which she will now be on the executive board. She is also a co-captain of the soccer team for the second season in a row.

A native of Brighton, Mich., McCarthy has played 912 of 928 minutes on the Miami back line this year and has started 27 of 28 matches over the past two seasons.

“I’m very grateful for the opportunity to be in a leadership position for the best conference in the country,” McCarthy said. “What [Shirelle] has done in our athletic department and what she has done in our SAAC group is astonishing and I would have never had the chance to do something like this without her.”

McCarthy and the Hurricanes return to the field at 8:00 p.m. Friday night when they take on No. 14 Notre Dame at Cobb Stadium.
