Soccer Faces No. 14/10 Florida in Home Opener
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami soccer team is set take on the Florida Gators Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. at Cobb Stadium in its first home match of the season.
The match will be the first meeting between the Hurricanes and Gators in Coral Gables since the 2011 season.
Miami (0-1-0) began its season in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. at the Charleston Nike Classic and had its initially scheduled season opener cancelled Friday night due to weather. The Hurricanes then fell 1-0 to Texas Sunday afternoon in what became the team’s first match of the season.
Three Hurricanes received the first regular season action of their college careers against the Longhorns. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce and freshman defender Maisie Baker both started, while freshman forward/midfielder Hanna Droh saw 26 minutes of action.
Baker and Droh are part of an eight-member recruiting class that joined 12 returning letter winners. Of those dozen, eight were starters in 2014 for Miami head coach Mary-Frances Monroe, now in her third year at the helm of the Hurricanes.
To open its 2015 campaign, Florida (1-1-0) won 2-0 at No. 17 UCF—the next opponent Miami faces after the Gators—and then followed that up with a 1-0 overtime loss at Ohio State. No. 14/10 Florida went 17-4-2 last season and reached the NCAA Championship quarterfinals.
This will be the first time since 2011 Miami and Florida square off in a match that is not the season opener. The action will be broadcast live on ESPN3 HERE and live stats can be found HERE.
