@CanesFutbol Captain's Corner: July 29, 2015
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The captains of the University of Miami soccer team for the 2015 season are writing a blog for HurricaneSports.com this year called Captain’s Corner, with Shannon McCarthy providing the opening entries this offseason.
Wednesday, in her third post, McCarthy touches on her time at home this summer, including how she is continuing to train while away from Coral Gables . . .
Greetings, Canes Fans! Good news . . . Preseason begins one week from today! I am writing to you from my home in Michigan. Having some time home before the season starts is much needed.
Training this week is highly individual. Every player is responsible for doing what she feels is best for her body to be ready for preseason. My message to teammates on workouts is: “Do what you need to do to be ready to go.”
Soon, another player(s) will join me as captain. I am looking forward to sharing the responsibility with one or two of my hardworking teammates. Together we are able to lead the team better and collaborate on decision-making.
Although I am not with the team right now, I am still preparing for preseason at home. Being home has not changed my training. In fact, I am able to incorporate some cross-training. I hung a heavy bag from the ceiling in my garage where I can do a 10-round boxing workout. Cross-training is great because it activates different muscle groups. I love boxing!
Spending quality time with my family is just as important as training. My dad, mom and brother always have things planned for me when I come home. We love playing cards and making dinner on the grill. I am thankful my aunt, uncle and grandma came to visit me. They all surprised me with early birthday gifts, which was very thoughtful. My boyfriend even surprised me too. He gave me flowers and dark chocolates for our anniversary after my lifting session yesterday—my favorites!
I am so grateful for all the loving people in my life. I would not be where I am today if it weren’t for their continued support. It means the world to me.
By this time next week, the first day of preseason will be under way. Get ready to watch a solid team compete this year. Thanks again for reading!
