Three @CanesFootball Players Earn ACC Honors
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Following Miami’s 30-6 win over Virginia Tech last week in Blacksburg, a trio of Hurricanes were recognized with ACC Player of the Week honors, the conference office announced Monday.
Junior running back Duke Johnson was named ACC Offensive Back of the Week, senior center Shane McDermott was named Offensive Lineman of the Week, while sophomore linebacker Jermaine Grace took home Co-Linebacker of the Week honors.
Johnson delivered the most dominant performance of his three-year career against the Hokies, totaling a career-best 249 yards on 24 carries. He scored two touchdowns in the win, and tied the third-best single-game rushing mark in program history with 249 yards on the ground. He also moved past the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the first season in his career with the performance.
McDermott, who has served as Miami’s starting center for the past three seasons, anchored a Hurricanes offensive line that paved the way for 456 total yards in Blacksburg. McDermott and his fellow linemen were crucial to Miami’s running game, which produced 364 yards and two runners that set career high marks in the win: Johnson (249) and sophomore Gus Edwards, who ran for 115 yards.
Grace had a dominant all-around game against the Hokies, posting four tackles (three solo), recording the first two fumble recoveries of his career and his second sack of the season in the win. Grace has sacks in back-to-back games, and ranks fourth on the team with 36 tackles so far this season. He also has 4.5 tackles for loss, the second-highest total among all Hurricanes defensive players.
