#CanesCamp Notebook (August 21)
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – After a two-a-day session on Wednesday, the Miami Hurricanes spent Thursday morning working hard under the South Florida sun.
The morning session was the only #CanesCamp practice scheduled for Thursday and head coach Al Golden decided to end the session early to give his team a break after powering through tough conditions to have a productive practice.
“I cut it a little bit,” Golden said. “I thought the humidity was catching up to us so I wanted to cut it. they did a good job responding and I thought they pushed through it, so we are going to give them a big break here and get them off their feet.”
There were several highlights on offense including a 25-yard run by sophomore running back Gus Edwards and a pair of first downs thrown by freshman quarterback Brad Kaaya to D’Mauri Jones and Malcolm Lewis.
Senior Ryan Williams also looked good in the 7-on-7 period, connected with senior tight end Clive Walford for 20 yards. Fellow senior Jake Heaps also impressed, threading a ball through defenders and to junior wideout Herb Waters for a 15-yard gain.
“I thought Jake was sharp,” Golden said. “We threw some more deep balls than we have. He worked through his progressions and did a good job.”
Defensively, Antonio Crawford was the latest defensive back to put up a stellar showing. The junior picked off a pair of passes, returning one for a touchdown.
A deep group that includes juniors Tracy Howard and Ladarius Gunter, as well as sophomores Artie Burns and Corn Elder, the cornerback competition has been intense and Golden is pleased with the depth the Canes have at the position.
“Yesterday I thought Ladarius looked really improved,” Golden said. “Corn probably had his best day yesterday and Artie did real well. Then we come back today and Antonio gets two interceptions and he looks better. It’s a group that’s competing. It’s a good situation because they’re competing for both corner spots and the starter at nickel.”
