Collins Named ACC Player of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Freshman slugger Zack Collins hauled in ACC Player of the Week honors Monday after powering No. 4 Miami to a perfect 5-0 week and sole possession of first place in the ACC.

The power-hitting catcher had four multi-hit games in five outings, leading Miami in hits (10) with one triple, one home run and nine RBIs. His .526 average at the plate (10-for-19) keyed Miami’s big week, which included the program’s first-ever road sweep at Clemson.

“It means a lot to me, because as the season started off, I didn’t think I’d be where I am today,” Collins said. “I’ve been going out and working hard every day. I’ve been pretty hot lately, and I’m really just trying to hit the ball hard.”

Collins factored in 14 of Miami’s 34 runs across the week, scoring five while driving in nine. The Pembroke Pines, Fla., native walked five times compared to just two strikeouts, and moved his season average to a team-best .306.

His triple slash across the week – which includes batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage – was .526/.600/.842.

“It’s a great honor for him to receive as a freshman,” head coach Jim Morris said. “He’s really on fire swinging the bat…he’s hot, and he’s doing a great job for us in the middle of the order. He’s also very good behind the plate.”

Collins is the second Hurricane to be recognized with weekly honors from the conference this season. Senior pitcher Javi Salas was named ACC Pitcher of the Week on March 10.
