@MiamiTrack Ready for Florida Relays

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Miami track and field program travels to Gainesville this weekend to compete against some of the best teams in the country.

Following a pair of home meets to open the 2014 outdoor season, the Hurricanes will compete in the Florida Relays at Percy Beard Track at James G. Pressly Stadium on the University of Florida campus. Miami director of track and field/cross country Amy Deem is eager to see how her team stacks up against some of the top programs in the United States.

“There is a lot of great competition this weekend with quality schools from all over the country,” Deem said. “It will really give us a good test and an indication of where we are after our hard work the past couple of weeks. I am really excited about the meet. It’s a great weekend of track and field for the state of Florida.”

Miami will have several standouts competing this weekend, including John-Patrick Friday, Alysha Newman and Jamika Glades. All three student-athletes head to Gainesville after strong performances at last week’s Miami Invitational.

“I am looking forward to some of the relays this weekend,” Deem said. “I am looking forward to the field events, too. JP had a big jump in the triple jump last week and Alysha will have some more quality competition in the pole vault. I am hoping that Jamika can step up in the 400 hurdles. She had a big personal-best in the 100m hurdles last week and now she is going into a great facility against great competition. I know she’s been working hard for this. I think across the board we are ready to have some good performances.”

The collegiate portion of the Florida Relays begins Friday at noon with the men’s hammer throw. The first running event Friday is the women’s 100m hurdles at 12:35 p.m. Saturday’s action begins at noon with the women’s sprint hurdles relay.
