@MiamiTrack Excited for VT Elite Meet
BLACKSBURG, Va. – After a week off to train and recover, the University of Miami track and field program returns to action at the Doc Hale VT Elite Meet.
Miami has 16 women and 15 men scheduled to compete in the two-day meet this weekend. The meet kicks off at 5 p.m. Friday with the women’s long jump and the women’s mile run. The Canes return Saturday to Rector Field House where competition is set to begin at 11 a.m. with the women’s high jump.
The women will be led by ACC performers of the week Shakima Wimbley and Alysha Newman. Both freshmen have been exemplary student-athletes so far and this will look to continue their success this weekend. Wimbley is scheduled to compete in three events (200m, 400m and 4x400m relay), while Newman will make her debut in the 60m hurdles and looks to improve her 4.31m mark in pole vault.
Other women to watch include seniors Alyssa McClure (60m, 200m), Alaine Tate (800m, 4x400m) and Lindsi Arrington (mile, 4x400m); juniors Taneisha Cordell (800m and 4x400m) Amber Monroe (shot put), Precious Ogunleye (shot put, weight throw) and Lea Johnson (weight throw); and sophomores Jamika Glades (400m, 60m hurdles), Kelsey Balkwill (200m, 400m, 4x400m) and Dakota Dailey-Harris (high jump).
On the men’s side, several talented Canes will compete including reigning ACC indoor and outdoor shot put champion Isaiah Simmons and freshman standout Gian Ragonesi. Miami will also have three Canes make their 2014 debuts as Christian Cook (60m hurdles, 4×400), Artie Burns (60m hurdles) and Carlos Mangum (weight throw) will all compete for the first time this year.
Juniors Phillip Dorsett (60m, 200m, long jump) and Timothy Richardson (long jump, triple jump), as well as senior Bassim El-Sabawi (60m, 200m, 4x400m) are other Miami men who could make some noise in Blacksburg this weekend.
Rector Field House hosts all of Virginia Tech’s indoor track meets. The facility features a 200-meter, Mondo-surfaced, banked track that is one of the few of its kind in the U.S. This track consistently rates as one of the fastest tracks in the country, thus making Rector Field House a destination for some of the top athletes in the world.
