Walford Named to Mackey Midseason Watch List
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Miami Hurricanes junior tight end Clive Walford is one of 29 players named to the 2013 John Mackey Award Midseason Watch List. Walford is one of four ACC tight ends on the list, joining North Carolina’s Eric Ebron, Virginia’s Jake McGee and Florida State’s Nick O’Leary.
Given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end, the award recipient is selected by vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee. The 2013 John Mackey Award recipient will be presented live on Dec. 12, 2013, at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show (6 p.m. ET, ESPNU).
Through five games, Walford has tallied 154 yards and two touchdowns on 11 catches. Walford has recorded a catch in 22 consecutive games, dating back to the 2011 season. 20 of Walford’s last 22 catches have resulted in either a first down or a touchdown.
He enjoyed a career season in 2012, finishing third on the team with 451 receiving yards on 25 catches and tied for the team lead with four touchdowns.
The John Mackey Award has been presented since 2000. Miami’s Kellen Winslow II won the 2003 John Mackey Award. The award is named for NFL Hall of Famer John Mackey, who is considered to be the best to have played the tight end position. A tight end by whom all others are measured, Mackey was a role model on and off the field as demonstrated by his Super Bowl championship, his commitment to community and his place in history as the first president of the NFL Players Association (NFLPA).
