CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami baseball team pulled even with 12th-ranked Clemson after a 2-1 victory in the second game of a three-day set Saturday at Alex Rodriguez Park.
Dale Carey’s leadoff infield single in the fifth would lead to Miami’s game-winning run. The senior would advance to second on a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt by Tyler Palmer. Then after a failed pick-off let Carey reach third, Alex Hernandez’s second hit of the day gave Miami (26-16, 9-11 ACC) the game’s final run and a 2-1 lead.
Though he walked a season high four batters, Miami junior Bryan Radziewski (6-1) struck out 10 opponents for the third time this season. The lefty tossed 112 pitches over seven innings, allowing only
two hits.
AJ Salcines pitched a perfect eighth and Eric Nedeljkovic earned his ninth save of the season after giving up a pair of two-out singles.
“That’s what we have been trying to do that last few weeks,” said Miami head coach Jim Morris on getting to Salcines and Nedelkovic in late-game situations. “Ned is our closer now. He has the personality, confidence and courage to be able to go into the ninth inning with the game on the line and be able to pitch.”
Saturday proved to be the second straight one-run game between the two teams, after the Tigers edged the Canes 1-0 in Friday’s opener. In fact, in the last five meetings, Clemson (27-12, 13-7 ACC) and Miami have combined to score only 18 runs.
For the second straight game, Clemson opened the scoring. In the top of the second, Steve Wilkerson would reach on a leadoff walk and then later score on a sacrifice fly to left field from Jon McGibbon.
The Canes would get that run back in the bottom of the third, scoring their first run of the series. Palmer roped a single to right center, but would advance to second on a fielding error from Clemson’s Steven Duggar. Three batters later, Palmer would cross the plate as Chantz Mack singled through the right side.
Mack would end the game with a game-high three hits.
The Canes handed Clemson starter Matthew Crownover his first loss of the season, dropping his record to 5-1.
The three-game series will conclude with a televised contest (CSS/ESPN3) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
