ACC Confirms 2016 UM-ND Football Game
GREENSBORO, NC — The University of Miami’s 2016 football game against the University of Notre Dame was confirmed Friday in an announcement by the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The conference announced the ACC opponents the Fighting Irish will play in the first three seasons of their football partnership with the league that begins with the 2014 season.
As part of the agreement to join the Atlantic Coast Conference, Notre Dame will play five ACC teams each year, alternating between three home games and two away and two home games and three away each year. Notre Dame will face every ACC team at least once in the first three-year rotation of games.
“The football partnership between the ACC and Notre Dame will not only enhance our league’s already ambitious football schedules but also will provide terrific fan excitement,” said ACC Commissioner John Swofford. “One of the benefits, moving forward, is that almost all of our student-athletes will have an opportunity to play against Notre Dame during their ACC careers which is extremely special.”
The 2016 meeting will occur in South Bend, Ind., with the Irish traveling to Miami for a 2017 meeting. The 2017 game has not been confirmed by the ACC at this point. Both games are part of the three-game series that Miami and Notre Dame announced in 2010.
The Hurricanes and Irish have played numerous memorable games against each other. The Canes and Irish have met twice in the last three season and are 7-16-1 against Notre Dame all-time. Prior to their recent meetings, The two schools had not faced off since 1990.
Miami last beat Notre Dame in the final regular season game of the 1989 regular season. The 27-10 victory helped pave the way for Miami’s meeting with Alabama in the Sugar Bowl that capped off the Hurricanes’ stellar season, en route to the Hurricanes’ third national championship.
Current ACC teams have played Notre Dame on 118 occasions, while the addition of Pittsburgh and Syracuse, which officially join the ACC on July 1, will increase that figure to 192 games.
Miami has played the third-most games against the Fighting Irish among ACC schools. Historically, their 24 meetings trail only incoming member Pittsburgh (68 games) and Georgia Tech (34 games).
