T&F Prepares for Auburn Invitational
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Miami track and fieldprogram travels to Alabama this weekend to compete in the Auburn Invitational, whichwill be held at CrossPlex Indoor Track & Field Center.
“I think it’s just going to be a great meet, justbecause of the quality of the teams that are going to be there,” director oftrack and field/cross country AmyDeem said. “We’ll see the difference with the SEC and ACC. Then TCU iscoming from the Big 12 and UCF is coming from (Conference USA) so it’s going tobe a little bit higher level competition than we had at Kentucky.”
The men’s and women’s teams will each compete in a total of 12 events, including sprints, hurdles, distance, relays, throws and jumps. Field eventswill open the meet Saturday at 9 a.m., while the running events kick off at 1p.m.
Freshman thrower IsaiahSimmons will look to improve on his impressive collegiate track debut.Simmons, who finished second at last week’s Kentucky Invitational, broke VinceWilfork’s nearly 12-year-old indoor shot put record with a throw of 17.87m.
The men will have two talented 4x400m teams competing at Auburn. The Canes’4×400 team finished third last week at Kentucky.
Fresh off a second place finish in the long jump a week ago, juniorAll-American SamanthaWilliams will lead the women in both the long and triple jumps. Williams’jump of 5.94m bested her previous career indoor mark of 5.87m set at lastyear’s ACC Indoor Championships.
Junior transfer AlaineTate is one of several talented runners on the women’s side. Tate, who finishedsecond in the 800m in her Hurricane debut last week, will look to improve onher 2:10.60 time.
