Dorsett Nominated for GEICO Play of the Year
CHICAGO – Sophomore wide receiver Phillip Dorsett’s 62-yard game-clinching touchdown Sept. 29 vs. NC State has been nominated for the GEICO Play of the Year. Each week, fans vote for the GEICO Play of the Year and the winner will be announced Nov. 23 at 1:30 p.m. ET on GEICO Best of College Football 2012 on CBS.
In addition to recognizing the season’s top plays, the one-hour CBS special relives the season’s greatest moments, players and traditions. The show also marks the culmination of the GEICO “Best of 2012” Football Tour, an interactive fan experience that visits 30 marquee games throughout the football season.
Each week for eight weeks, four incredible college football plays will be nominated as the Play of the Year on the GEICO Best of College Football Facebook page. The eight weekly winners will then faceoff in a week of finals voting from November 4 through 11 to determine the 2012 GEICO Play of the Year.
Tied at 37 late in the fourth, Hurricanes QB Stephen Morris bought time in the backfield with a nifty juke and rolled way out of the pocket. This allowed Dorsett to get behind the defense while streaking all the way down and across the field. Morris heaved the ball and hit Dorsett in stride and the speedy wideout was able to keep his balance just long enough to get into the end zone. The touchdown came with only 19 seconds remaining and secured the victory for the Canes, 44-37.
Dorsett’s game-clinching touchdown catch is competing against three other plays from week five, a one-handed snag by West Virginia’s J.D. Woods, a leaping grab in the back of the end zone by Middle Tennessee’s Anthony Amos and a broken-tackled filled run by Michigan State’s Keith Mumphery.
To watch and vote for Dorsett or any of the other week five highlight plays, visit the GEICO Best of College Football Facebook page. Fans can vote once a day. Week five voting is now open and ends Sunday, Oct. 14, at 11:59 a.m. CT.
