Hurricanes Traveling for Weekend Tournament
MORGANTOWN,W. Va. — The Miami Hurricaneswomen’s soccer team is back on the pitch and training for a weekend visit toWest Virginia for the WVU 90 Minute Classic.
The four-team tournament, which also includes host WVU, No.8 Penn State and BIG EAST foe Pittsburgh, will feature two match-ups for eachinvitee at the Dick Diesk Soccer Stadium. Miami, who will open tournamentplay at 5 p.m. Friday against Pitt, will battle the Mountaineers Sunday atnoon.
“We’ve scheduled two really good teams,” second-year headcoach Tom Anagnost said. “Right now, we’re focusing on ourselves, and how tobecome more on the same page both individually and collectively.”
The Hurricanes (2-2-0) are looking to get back in the wincolumn after a 1-0 overtime loss in overtime at thehands of No. 9 UCF. Before Sunday’s loss, the Hurricanesused an effective early offensive surge in a 4-0 home-opening win over Morehead Stateon Aug. 24.
Through its first four matches last season, Miamihad scored five goals and allowed four. Though their 2012 record currentlystands at 2-2-0, the Hurricanes’ improved totals include eight goals scored and onlythree allowed.
Seven different Hurricanes have tallied goals in the early going, including five playerswho have opened theiraccounts in Orange and Green: Ally Andreini, Jasmine Paterson, Jesse Shugg, Paige Lombard and Tina Romagnuolo.Coach Anagnost and his staff know they will need effective play from theirnewcomers if the team hopes to make a splash this weekend against two qualityopponents.
“We’re trying to get better at it, technically and tactically,”Anagnost added. “I think as a whole team, we’re really just focusing onconsistency.”
