CORAL GABLES, Fla – For the first time during #CanesCamp, the Miami Hurricanes football team donned full pads Tuesday at GreenTree Practice Fields. Tuesday’s practice featured a live short-yardage, goal line period towards the end of practice.

Second-year head coach Al Golden doesn’t view practicing in full pads any differently than only shoulder pads.

“We don’t want to do it any different than in tops,” Golden said during pre-practice media availability. “(We need to) be sure we protect ball carriers, keep them up, no side shots. Obviously, we need to try to protect our team.

“Lower pads are for protection,” Golden said. “It allows them to do some cutting in a compartmentalized state in their individual period.”

During the first half of practice, redshirt senior LB Ramon Buchanan was flying all over the field on the defensive side of the ball. At the end of practice during the live short-yardage period, Buchanan and Co. were encouraging their defensive teammates, leading the corps in spirited cheers.

As was the case during Monday’s practice, sophomore DL Olsen Pierre knocked down a pair of passes at the line of scrimmage.

Two of the biggest offensive plays came from junior QB Stephen Morris during the short-yardage drills. Freshman WR Robert Lockhart Jr. hauled down a Morris pass in the corner of the end zone, managing to get one foot down before falling out of bounds. Morris’ second nice play came a few minutes later. After being forced out of the pocket, the junior signal-caller showed nice field vision by rolling to his left to find sophomore WR Rashawn Scott in the end zone.

After Morris’ TD pass to Scott, redshirt sophomore QB Ryan Williams threw a dart to freshman WR Herb Waters for a score.

#CanesCamp continues Wednesday with the Hurricanes’ first two-a-days practice of the fall. The morning practice is slated for 8:20 a.m.
