Bartenstein Falls in Round Two of NCAA Tournament

May 24, 2012

ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Miami’s Anna Bartenstein ended her NCAA Singles Championship run with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 loss to USC’s Zoe Scandalis in the tournament’s second round at the University of Georgia Dan Magill Tennis Complex on Thursday.

“Anna came up a little short today against a great player,” said Miami Head Coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews. “Anna has exemplified character, passion and pride in The U since she arrived three years ago.  Her presence and competitive spirit will definitely be missed.”

Bartenstein came into the tournament with a No. 18 national ranking and at one point during the season moved all the way up to No. 12. She jumped out to a great start against the 14th-ranked Scandalis, claiming the first set, 6-1.

The Southern California product then forced a third set after winning the second, 6-3. It appeared that Scandalis had taken all of the momentum. However, Bartenstein battled back and took four of the next five games for a 4-3 lead. In the end though, Scandalis proved to be too much as she won the set’s final three games to take the match.

Bartenstein ends her season with a 20-7 spring record after compiling a 20-5 record in the fall. The Austrian led the Canes from the No. 1 singles position all season and led them to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the fourth consecutive year.
