CORAL GABLES Fla.- The University of Miami women’s tennis team dropped its first ACC match of the season to the No. 3 Duke Blue Devils this Friday at the Ambler Tennis Center in Durham, NC.

The Hurricanes started strong with an 8-4 win by 24th-ranked Liat Zimmerman and Melissa Bolivar at the No. 1 doubles position, but Duke would counter with victories at No. 3 and then No. 2 to steal the match’s first point.

From there it was all Duke, as the Blue Devils proceeded to overwhelm the bottom half of the Canes lineup. Miami would lose No. 5, No. 6, and then No. 4 singles, all in straight sets to give Duke the 4-0 victory.

“We looked so incredibly flat,” said head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews. “To give yourself a chance to be succesful against a team like Duke, you must set momentum early. We simply got our teeth in the match too late.”

Before play was stopped, 26th ranked Gabriela Mejia looked strong against Ester Goldfeld at the No. 2 position. The senior took the first set 6-3 and was ahead 3-2 in the second before Melissa Bolivar handed over the deciding point to Mary Clayton at No. 4.

The Canes will seek to bounce back tomorrow against North Carolina. The match is set to begin at will take place at 11 a.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
