CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The No. 51 University of Miami men’s tennis team came up short today against the Maryland Terrapins as they lost in a 4-3 match at the Tennis Center at College Park.

The Hurricanes (8-8, 1-6) were led by sophomores Gabriel Flores, Omar Aly and Diego Soto who each won their singles matches against the Terps. Soto earned his fifth straight singles victory as he defeated Sergio Wyss in straight sets 6-4 and 6-3 while Aly also won in straight sets 7-6 (7-5) and 6-2 against Jesse Kiuru. Flores beat Maros Horny 7-6 (7-1), 5-7 and 1-0 (10-7).

Miami fought hard in the other three singles matches but were unable to earn the decisive fourth point in the match.

“Our sophomores had a good day winning their singles matches at the Nos. 1, 3 and 4 positions. We tried some different teams in doubles today, but Maryland was strong in all positions,” said Coach Mario Rincon. “We must stay positive and continue working hard, as a I feel we can surprise a top team in the last part of our season and turn things around.”

Wilfredo Gonzalez lost to Maryland’s Vlad Stefan at the No. 2 position. Henrique Tsukamoto lost to John Collins and Victor Mauz fell to Tommy Laine at the No. 5 and 6 positions, respectively.

The Terrapins (5-12, 2-5) earned the first four points of the match including three doubles victories over the Canes. Aly and Flores were defeated by the No. 24 ranked pair of Collins and Horny in an 8-3 match at the No. 1 position.

The Hurricanes will now return home to host No. 24 North Carolina on Fri., April 6 at 2 p.m. and No. 6 Duke on Sun., April 8 at 12 p.m.
