CORAL GABLES, Fla.- The No. 5 University of Miami women’s tennis team will seek to remain perfect in the ACC this Sunday, when it takes on the 69th-ranked Maryland Terrapins at noon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
The Hurricanes have not dropped a match since Feb. 10 and carry a 14-1 record into this weekend’s match. The team, having made its most recent jump in the polls following three ACC wins against No. 21 Georgia Tech, Wake Forest and NC State, also had its two seniors advance in the singles rankings. Anna Bartenstein currently stands at No. 18 and Gabriela Mejia at No. 26.
Maryland faltered a bit in the month of March, as they have dropped their last five matches to give them a 6-9 overall record, 0-5 in the ACC. The Terps do however boast the No. 31 singles player in Cristina Stancu and the No. 15 doubles team of Ana Belzunce and Welma Luus. Stancu, their sophomore No. 1 singles player, has a 10-5 record but hasn’t fared well against ranked opponents having dropped all but one match against a ranked foe. Belzunce and Luus are 9-6 and earned their seventh victory against a ranked opponent this past weekend against Clemson’s Keri Wong and Josipa Bek.
Miami has managed impressive victories over the years against Maryland, with the Canes having swept the Terps, 7-0, the past three seasons. In the last meeting between the two teams, Bartenstein, Mejia, and Melissa Bolivar all defeated their opponents in straight sets.
