CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The No. 59 University of Miami men’s tennis team came up short in Clemson, S.C. today as they lost to the Tigers 6-1 at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center.

Omar Aly earned the Hurricanes lone point on the day as he defeated Clemson’s Gerardo Meza in straight sets. He won the match 6-3 and 7-6.

“Clemson played well and deserved the win today,” said Head Coach Mario Rincon. “Omar had a good win at # 2 singles, and Wilfredo and Victor’s matches could’ve gone our way.”

Victor Mauz and Wilfredo Gonzalez fought their way to a third set in singles play, but couldn’t close the deal. Victor Mauz won the first set 4-6 before losing the next two 6-1 and 6-4. Wilfredo Gonzalez lost to Ayrton Wibowo in a third set tiebreaker.

The Hurricanes fought hard in doubles play but were unable to earn the point as they won only one of the three matches. Gabriel Flores and Diego Soto defeated Cedric Wellems and Ayrton Wibowo in an 8-6 victory.

Sophomore Omar Aly and Freshman Wilfredo Gonzalez kept their match close, but ultimately lost 8-4 to Yannick Maden and Zachary Rigsby. Victor Mauz and Marco Stancati also lost to Dominique Maden and Gerardo Meza.

“We didn’t get off to a good start in singles, and were down a break on a few courts at the beginning of each set,” continued Rincon. “Our guys competed hard, and we look forward to playing GT on Tuesday.”

Miami will travel to Atlanta, Ga. to take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Tuesday, March 13 at 2:30 p.m. The Canes will then return home next Saturday, March 17 to face Alabama.
