BOSTON-The Miami men’s and women’s track and field teams turned in some impressive performances during the second day of competition at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston. Four Canes qualified for the finals in their respective events and three members of the team had point-scoring performances, led by freshman Innocent Jacob and Senior Miranda Wilson.

Jacob placed third in the long jump with a season-best mark of 7.36m (24′ 1.75″), securing six points for the men’s team. Wilson finished second in the weight throw with a season-best distance of 19.07m (62′ 6.75″) on her last throw of the competition.

“It’s been a tough indoor season, but Coach Hicks and I kept working at it,” said Wilson. “Today I didn’t start as well as I would have liked, but I finished strong and it paid off.”

Wilson earned eight points for the women’s team.

Also scoring for the Hurricanes on Day 2 was transfer Samantha Williams with a season-best jump of 5.87m (19′ 3.25″), good for seventh place. Just missing out on the points was sophomore Nicole Cummings with a 5.82m (19′ 1.25″) ninth-place finish.

Leading the qualifiers into the final day of competition was senior Tarika Williams, who made the eight-person final in the 60 meters and the 200 meters, in which she is the defending ACC Champion. Fellow defending champion Devon Hill was joined by freshman Christian Cook in the final of the 60-meter hurdles after both ran season-bests in the event at 7.73 and 8.04, respectively. The biggest surprise for the Hurricanes may have been senior Brian Laskowski qualifying for the 800-meter final with a personal- best time of 1:51.67.

“I was really happy with today’s race, it was the culmination of four years of hard work.” said Laskowski. “I just missed the finals on two other occasions so to finally make it and with my mom and teammates watching it was very special for me.”

Other notable performances included senior Austin Rector with a personal best time 1:54.90 in the 800 meters and sophomore Lindsi Arrington placing 12th and narrowly missing the final in the one mile with a personal best 4:54.95.

Both the men’s and women’s teams are in ninth place after two days of competition with 6 and 15 points, respectively. Virginia Tech is the current leader on the men’s side with 40.5 points through six events. North Carolina leads the women with 35 points after seven events.
