No. 31 Miami Edges Florida A&M 4-3

CORAL GABLES, Fla.– The University of Miami men’s tennis team defeated Florida A&M 4-3 Sunday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
The Hurricanes won five matches on the day with four singles victories and one doubles win.
“It was a difficult day,” said head coach Mario Rincon. “We knew they were a very powerful and aggressive team in singles and we were able to contain them.”
Wilfredo Gonzalez won from the No. 2 position against Takura Happy in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5. Diego Soto also had a big win to guarantee the Canes win beating FAMU’s Levan Clark 7-5 and 6-2.
“I saw the match score and knew the team needed my victory,” said Soto. “I played very solid after that and I won the set 7-5. It was tough, but I’m happy to win this match for me and overall for my team.”
Also victorious today were Victor Mauz and Santiago Nieto, who both won in straight sets. Mauz defeated Chidi Gabriel 6-3 and 5-2 as Gabriel retired due to injury. Nieto beat Fabrice Myrtil 6-1 and 6-3.
In doubles play the Canes won one of three doubles matches as sophomores Gabriel Flores and Diego Soto defeated FAMU’s Chidi Gabriel and Fabrice Myrtil 8-1.
UM’s Gonzalez and Stancati made a great comeback in there match against the Rattler’s Levan Clark and Salif Kante, but came up just short as they lost 9-8.
“We were in a deep hole in the No. 2 doubles position,” continued Rincon. “We came all the way back and we had a chance to win the doubles point. It got away from us.”
