CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team defeated Florida Atlantic University 6-1 Thursday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
The Canes swept the doubles matches and won five-of-six in singles play.
“It feels good to get our first win of the season,” said Coach Mario Rincon. “Our guys seemed a bit tight to start both the doubles and singles matches, but when they finally relaxed, they really played well.”
Gabriel Flores won, 1-6, 7-5, 6-3, at the top position and Henrique Tsukamoto also won in three (6-2, 4-6, 10-7).
Omar Aly came up short in the No. 2 position, 6-3, 5-7, 5-10, after injuring his thumb late in the tiebreaker.
Wilfredo Gonzalez made quick work of his opponent, winning 6-0, 6-0, one of three Canes to win in straight sets. Diego Soto and Victor Mauz won 7-5, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-1, respectively.
“In singles, Wilfredo played extremely well and Gabriel made a good comeback for the win,” said Rincon.
Miami won all three doubles matches as the top duo of Aly/Gonzalez downed FAU’s Taylor Albrecht and Will Neuner 8-4 and in the second spot, Flores/Soto defeated Chris Janssen and Sean Bacha, 8-6. Mauz/Nieto wrapped up doubles play with an 8-3 win over Garrett Betsarakis and Robert Dubuque.
“Today was a good team effort and we look forward to playing FAMU on Sunday,” concluded Rincon.
