Gardnar Mulloy Miami Invitational - Day 3
Jan. 14, 2012
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Sophomore Gabriel Flores won his singles match and teamed with Diego Soto to win the doubles match on the final day of the Gardnar Mulloy Miami Invitational.
“Today’s match was an effort of three days,” Flores said about his singles match. “Being a sophomore playing at the No. 1 position is nerve racking. But after two days of playing there, I finally broke through the nerves and played well today.”
Flores defeated Texas A&M sophomore Junior Ore, 6-4, 6-3, for Miami’s only singles win of the day. The ITA ranked Ore as the No. 104 singles player in the nation in the Jan. 3 poll.
“Gabriel was had an outstanding match at the No. 1 position for us today,” said Coach Mario Rincon. “I’m looking forward to a great season from him and the entire team.”
In doubles, Flores paired with Soto to defeat the Illinois duo of Roy Kalmanovich and Stephen Hoh, 8-3. Kalmanovich is ranked No. 24 in the nation in singles.
“This tournament is a very good way to start the year because we get to play tough teams early,” said Flores. “We get to start with a competitive environment with tough teams and we face ranked competition early and at home.”
In Miami’s doubles against Illinois, Omar Aly and Wilfredo Gonzalez lost to Dennis Nevolo and Farris Gosea 5-2, a default due to an injury. In the third flight, Victor Mauz and Santiago Nieto were defeated by Ross Guignon and Tim Kopinski, 8-6.
In singles against Texas A&M, Soto and Mauz each lost in three, 6-4, 0-6, 7-5 and 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, respectively. Tsukamoto (6-4, 6-0), Gonzalez (6-3, 7-5), Nieto (6-3, 7-5) and Marco Stancati (6-1, 6-2), each lost in straight sets.
“Overall this was a good tournament for us,” said Rincon. “We got a lot better over the three days. The Gardnar Mulloy Miami Invitational gave our young guys the opportunity to compete at the highest level and prepare us for the remainder of the season.”
The Gardnar Mulloy Most Outstanding Player was awarded to Roy Kalmanovich from Illinois and the Gardnar Mulloy Sportsmanship Award went to Gonzalo Escobar from Texas Tech.
The Canes return to the Neil Schiff Tennis Complex next weekend, hosting Florida Atlantic University at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 19 and Florida A&M at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 22.
