Perryman Named Freshman All-American

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — CBSSports.com has released its 2011 Freshman All-America Team, and Hurricanes linebacker Denzel Perryman is among the 26 players receiving recognition.

Perryman, who finished the season ranked first among Atlantic Coast Conference freshmen with 69 tackles, saw action in all 12 games for Miami in 2011. He finished his first year with the Hurricanes ranked second on the team in tackles (69) and tied for third on the team in tackles for loss (6.5).

In his first career start against then-No. 20 Georgia Tech, Perryman recorded seven tackles, three tackles for loss and his first career sack. He would go on to start the final four games of the season for the Hurricanes, recording a career-high 14 tackles in the team’s season finale against Boston College.

Perryman entered the university after a stellar career at nearby Coral Gables High School, where he recorded 137 tackles and four sacks in his senior season. He was named Area Defensive Player of the Year after his junior campaign with the Cavaliers, finishing the season with 126 solo tackles.

The Miami, Fla. native was one of five players from the Atlantic Coast Conference named Freshman All-Americans by CBSSports.com. Joining Perryman on the roster were Giovani Bernard (North Carolina), Sammy Watkins (Clemson), Timmy Jernigan (Florida State), and Merrill Noel (Wake Forest).
