Bartenstein Set for USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships

Nov. 2, 2011

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Senior Anna Bartenstein will continue her fall campaign with a trip to Flushing, N.Y. for the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships beginning Nov. 3 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Bartenstein, who is coming off a championship singles performance at the Jack Kramer Club Women’s Collegiate Invitational, will begin the tournament with a match against Aleksandra Josifoska of UNLV at noon on Thursday. Bartenstein has compiled an 18-4 record this fall and qualified for the event as one of seven at-large selections.

“I’m really excited for her to have the opportunity to play in this tournament,” women’s tennis coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “She’s undoubtedly one of the best players in college tennis, and she deserves this chance.”

The Graz, Austria native is looking to become the third Hurricane to win the women’s singles championship at the prestigious event. She would join Audra Cohen, who accomplished the feat in 2006, and Megan Bradley, who took the title in 2004. Bianca Eickhorn represented the Hurricanes in the 2010 edition of the tournament.

“Anna’s obviously a phenomenal outdoor player, but I think her style of play is well-suited for indoors,” Coach Yaroshuk-Tews said. “I think she’s going to be able to do some damage.”

The USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships feature a 32-player singles draw and a 20-team doubles draw for men and women. The tournament begins Thursday at 9 a.m. with championships in each bracket set for Sunday, Nov. 6.
