Bartenstein Captures Championship at Jack Kramer Invitational
Oct. 31, 2011
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team capped a successful trip to Rolling Hills, Calif. with a championship performance from one of its most decorated senior members.
Anna Bartenstein, who earned the No. 1 seed in the singles bracket of the inaugural Jack Kramer Club Women’s Collegiate Invitational, defeated the second-seeded Pamela Montez of UCLA (6-1, 6-2) to earn the championship on the final day of the tournament.
The Graz, Austria native, who defeated the fourth-seeded Jordaan Sanford of Baylor in the semifinals on Saturday, saved her best for the very last match of the tournament. The victory over Montez was the quickest of her four wins at the invitational and came against perhaps her most difficult challenger. With the win, Bartenstein improved her record in the fall to an impressive 18-4.
Bartenstein and fellow senior Gabriela Mejia, who teamed up as one of the Hurricanes two doubles entries, had a disappointing exit in the semifinals against the No.1-seeded UCLA duo featuring Montez and Skylar Morton (8-4). Bartenstein would make amends on Sunday, however, with her dominating performance against Montez in the tournament final.
The other Hurricanes doubles team, consisting of sophomores Brittany Dubins and Melissa Bolivar, fought its way to the quarterfinals before falling to the second-seeded Pepperdine duo of Alejandra Granillo and Lorraine Guillermo (8-3) on Saturday. Dubins and Bolivar each made their way to the Round of 16 in the singles bracket before falling in their match-ups on Friday.
The Hurricanes will continue their fall schedule as they prepare for the USTA/ITA Indoor Championships in Flushing, N.Y. beginning Thursday, Nov. 3. Bartenstein qualified for the championships with her performance at the Southeast Regional Championships at the University of Florida Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville, Fla. earlier in October.
