Hurricanes Begin USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team battled through a tough first day at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. The Hurricanes managed one singles victory and three doubles victories on the first day of competition at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships.

Sophomore Gabriel Flores earned the lone singles victory in a match against FAU’s Chris Janssen. He defeated him in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.

The Hurricanes had more success in doubles play, advancing one team to the round of 16 and another to the round of 32.

The doubles team of freshman Victor Mauz and senior Santiago Nieto won their first two matches before losing in the round of 16 to Campbell Johnson and Will Reynolds of Georgia, 8-6. The pair defeated Jacksonville’s Jose Fantova and Larry Condez in the first round and Stetson’s Maksim Levanovich and Hans Adrian Riseng in the second round of play.

Sophomores Omar Aly and Pedro Ast needed a tiebreaker in their first doubles match, a 9-8 (5) win against Kennesaw State’s Simon Janik and Alex Toliver. Aly and Ast lost 8-1 in the next round to Andres Bucaro and Brian Alden of FSU.

Diego Soto, a sophomore, went winless on the first day at the University of Georgia. After winning the first set 6-1 in a match against FSU’s Jason Zafiros, Soto lost the next two, 5-7 and 5-7. He also lost his only doubles match with Flores to Maritz Buerchner and Daniel Sotomarino from UNF.

Play is scheduled to begin Saturday at 9 a.m. with four doubles quarterfinal matches and the first round of singles consolation. The Hurricanes will start play in the singles main draw at 11 a.m.
