Gainesville, Fla. – University of Miami senior women’s tennis player Anna Bartenstein advanced to the second round of the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships on Friday at the Ring Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Florida. Bartenstein was one of four Hurricanes competing Friday.

Bartenstein, ranked 25th nationally in the ITA preseason singles poll, faced Florida State’s Leyla Erkan in her opening-round match. The Graz, Austria native claimed her team-leading 12th win of the fall season on the strength of a 6-1, 6-1 decision. She will continue action Saturday afternoon with two matches, the first coming against Kennesaw State’s Alex Apostu. The second match will be determined by the outcome of the earlier contest.

“Anna had a good start to the tournament,” said UM women’s tennis head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews. “We’re going to take it day-by-day and match-by-match as we look to get better as the tournament progresses.”

In other action for the Hurricanes, sophomore Melissa Bolivar had her four-match win streak snapped in a three-set decision to Florida’s 85th-ranked Caroline Hitimana on scores of 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

Meanwhile, fellow sophomore Brittany Dubins stumbled in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6(5), against Elizabeth Kilborn of Georgia Tech. Dubins and Bolivar will each compete in Saturday’s singles consolation bracket to be announced later Friday evening.

In doubles play, Miami’s lone entry of Bolivar and Dubins fell in a tightly contested first round matchup against USF’s duo of Loreto Alonso Martinez and Ecaterina Vasenina in a 9-7 outcome.

Action at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships resumes Saturday at 9 a.m. The match pairings will be posted as soon as they become available by the ITA at ITAtennis.com. A consolation bracket will be updated as well for singles play.
