Women's Tennis Set for Southeast Regional Championships

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Four University of Miami women’s tennis student-athletes are headed to the 2011 USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships being hosted by the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla.
Anna Bartenstein, Brittany Dubins and Melissa Bolivar will compete in the field of 64 singles bracket. The duos of Dubins/Bolivar and Bartenstein/Gabriela Mejia will compete in the doubles competition.
The Southeast Regional is one of 12 regional tournaments. The Southeast Region is comprised of 19 schools including: Bethune-Cookman, UCF, Florida A&M, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, FIU, Florida State, Florida, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Georgia, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Mercer, Miami, North Florida, USF and Stetson.
The four-day singles and doubles tournament will act as a feeder into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships which will be held in Flushing, N.Y. on November 3-6. The winners of the singles and doubles bracket will advance to the New York event.
Ranked 25th in the ITA preseason poll, Miami senior Anna Bartenstein is looking to continue her strong play from the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif. She went 5-2 at the event, knocking off seventh-ranked Nicole Gibbs (Stanford) while falling in the semifinals of the consolation bracket to 26th-ranked Joanna Mather (Florida). Bartenstein stands at 11-3 on the fall season.
Bartenstein will be paired with fellow nationally-ranked teammate and fellow senior Gabriela Mejia, ranked 103rd in the ITA preseason poll. The last time these two were on the hard court, they went undefeated at the UCF Quad Tournament in Orlando. Mejia also won her singles bracket at the Duke Fab Four Invite the week prior, winning the final in three sets.
Sophomore Melissa Bolivar will be competing in both the singles and doubles bracket. Bolivar is coming off an undefeated tournament run at the UCF Quad Tournament, winning her final match in three sets.
Bolivar will be paired with fellow sophomore Brittany Dubins in doubles play. Together, these two also went undefeated at their last tournament, going 3-0 in the UCF Quad Tournament. On the year, they hold a record of 4-2.
The singles and doubles tournament draws will occur Thursday, Oct. 20. The match pairings will be posted as soon as they become available by the ITA at ITAtennis.com. A consolation bracket will be in place as well.
