Oct. 7, 2011

Pacific Palisades, Calif. – University of Miami women’s tennis senior Anna Bartenstein picked up two wins Friday in the consolation bracket of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships at the Riviera Country Club. She will play again Saturday at 12 p.m. Pacific in the semifinals.

After falling Thursday evening in the main draw bracket to top-ranked and top-seeded Jana Juricova, UMiami’s Anna Bartenstein – ranked 25th nationally – headed into the consolation bracket with a chip on her shoulder. The Graz, Austria native had lost just her second match of the fall a day earlier, and was seeking her 10th win of the 2011-12 campaign.

In her opening match, Bartenstein faced off against seventh-ranked Nicole Gibbs of Stanford – seeded third in the consolation bracket. Bartenstein took down Gibbs in a three-set thriller, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. The win was her fourth of the tournament over a ranked ITA opponent, and the first of the year against a Top 10 foe.

Later in the evening, Bartenstein took down her second opponent of the day in the form of 64th-ranked Anastasia Putilina of Utah. She took the match in straight-set form, 6-1, 7-6(6).

Bartenstein now advances to play Florida’s 26th-ranked Joanna Mather on Saturday afternoon. Mather advanced with two wins Friday, taking down Baylor’s Nina Secerbegovic in a walkover/injury, as well as Virginia’s Lindsey Hardenbergh in straight sets, respectively.

With the wins Friday, Bartenstein improves her record to 11-2 on the fall season, and has now won 27 of her last 31 matches dating back to last year.

Singles quarterfinalists and consolation champions will receive automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, held Nov. 3-6 in Flushing, N.Y.
