Last-Minute Goal Tops Canes in Blacksburg
Oct. 7, 2011
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The University of Miami women’s soccer team fell in a 2-1 heartbreaker to Virginia Tech Friday night at the Hokies’ Thompson Field. With the scored knotted at one after second half goals from Virginia Tech’s Jazmine Reeves and Miami’s Shannon Caspar, the Hokies’ Shannon Mayrose headed in Amanda Gerhard’s cross in the game’s final minute. The goal was the team-leading seventh for Mayrose and it ended a match that seemed destined for overtime after the Canes rallied back to tie the game at one in the 71st minute. After Reeves’ goal just a minute prior, Miami wasted no time as Caspar scored the fourth goal of her freshman season. The Jupiter, Fla. native connected on a loose ball that was fed into the box on a free kick off the foot of junior Kate Howarth. Miami’s senior keeper, Vikki Alonzo made eight saves on the night – the most since turning away nine shots in the Canes’ season-opener against Florida. Five different players recorded shots on goal for UM, led by a pair from sophomore Tara Schwitter. Miami returns home to face No. 7 Boston College on Oct. 13 and then 17th-ranked Maryland on Oct. 16. Both games will be held at Cobb Stadium. |
