Men's Tennis has Strong Showing on Rainy Day 2
Sept. 24, 2011
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Sophomore Diego Soto won both his singles and doubles matches today to lead the University of Miami men’s tennis team on a rain-shortened second day of competition at the University of South Florida’s Florida State Championships.
Soto, a native of Spain, will take on USF’s Wael Kilani in the next round of singles play on Sunday. He advanced after defeating Julien Belair from UNF, 6-3 and 6-1.
Gabriel Flores, also a sophomore, and Soto continued their doubles success with an 8-5 victory over FSU’s Andres Bucaro and Cristian Gonzalez Mendez.
The Hurricanes had two more singles victories in consolation play by Flores and sophomore Pedro Ast. Ast won in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-0, against USF’s Oliver Pramming. Flores needed a tiebreaker to defeat FSU’s Jason Zafiros, 7-6, 6-1, 7-4.
Victor Mauz, Miami’s only freshman, didn’t get a chance to play today due to rain cancelling play around 5 p.m.
